Starting with the Body:

  • Chain 4 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
  • Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet).
  • Make 11 more double crochets into the ring.

Round 2:

  • Slip stitch into the top chain of the starting chain-3.
  • Chain 3 (counts as one double crochet).

In Round 3:

  • Chain 3 (counts as one double crochet).
  • 2 double crochets in the next stitch, 1 double crochet in the next stitch – repeat around.
  • You will end up with 36 stitches for this round.

Round 4:

  • Chain 3.

For Double Crochet Even:

  • Work 1 double crochet into each of the next 4 stitches.
  • After 4 “even” stitches, do 2 double crochet in the next stitch.
  • Repeat 4 even stitches, 2 in the next around. This increases your stitch count evenly.

Rounds 5-9:

  • Chain 3 and turn.
  • Work 1 double crochet into each stitch around.
  • These rounds are worked even without increases.

Transitioning to Secondary Color & Working the Brim:

  • After completing Round 9, attach the secondary color without cutting the main color.

Row 1 of Brim:

  • Chain 1 with the new color.
  • Work 1 single crochet into each stitch around.

Row 2 of Brim:

  • Chain 1 and turn your work.
  • Skip the first stitch, 2 single crochets in the next.
  • Follow with a pattern of 4 single crochets even, 2 single crochets in the next stitch around the brim.
  • Continue with 3 even, and then 2 in the next stitch, following the pattern to create a sloped brim effect.

Finishing Touches:

Reverse Single Crochet Edging:

  • Upon completing the brim rows, work a reverse single crochet edging around the hat and brim’s edge for a finished look.

Weaving in Ends:

  • Use the tapestry needle to securely weave in all loose ends.
