Tip:

For added durability and a polished finish, use a starch spray after completing your crochet pieces.

Materials:

  • Similar to the star: Weight 4 cotton yarn
  • 4 mm hook for both the cookie and icing

Instructions:

Cookie:

Round 1:

  • Begin with a magic ring or chain 4 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring. Chain 1. Work 12 half double crochets into the ring, pull ring tight.

Round 2:

  • Work into the first half double crochet as follows: one half double crochet, three double crochets, and one half double crochet—all in the same stitch. Slip stitch in the next two stitches. Repeat once more in the next stitch to form the top of the heart. Work three single crochets, one in each of the next three stitches, two half double crochets for the point, and finish with a single crochet in each of the last three stitches.

For Round 3:

  • Start with a single crochet in the same stitch as the last slip stitch from the previous round. Increase in the next three stitches by working two single crochets in each. Continue with the pattern, matching the increases to create a curved top and using slip stitches to define the heart’s point more clearly. Finish by working down the other side of the heart similarly and shape with an invisible join or slip stitch to close.

Icing Edging:

  • Use the same hook size or go down half a size for a tighter finish.
  • Work single crochets around the edge of the heart. Adjust your stitches at the curves and the point of the heart to maintain the shape. Slip stitches can be used at the heart’s center dip to define its shape further.

Decorative Techniques:

  • You can add simple crochet flowers, leaves, or any designs you like on top of the heart or star by using embroidery techniques or by crocheting small motifs and sewing them on.
  • For the icing, simply mimic the outer shape of the cookie with a smaller hook size and lighter yarn, then sew it onto the top, leaving the backside cleaner and plush.
