Tip:
Choose a soft, baby-friendly yarn to ensure the blanket is gentle on delicate skin and easy to care for.
Material:
- Yarn
- Crochet Hook
- Scissors
- Yarn Needle
- Stitch Markers
- Pattern or Tutorial Access
- Gauge Checker
Create a Slip Knot & Foundation Chain:
- Make a slip knot on your hook.
- Chain the required number based on the size you’re making. The blanket is worked in a multiple of 12 + 2. So, for a miniature practice version, you could chain 26 (24 + 2).
First Row (Row 1):
- Identify the back bar of the foundation chain and work into this for a neater edge.
- Double crochet (DC) into the third chain from the hook working into the bar at the back of the chain. You will place two DC into this same stitch (an increase).
- DC into each of the next three stitches.
- Work a double crochet two together (DC2tog) stitch over the next two stitches. Repeat this once more for a total of two DC2tog.
Continue the pattern across the row: *2 DC in next stitch, 1 DC in next three stitches, DC2tog over next two stitches, and repeat from * ending with a 2 DC increase in the last stitch.
Remaining Rows (Row 2 and Beyond):
- Chain 2 (does not count as a stitch) and turn your work.
- Work the same pattern as Row 1, making sure that you are creating increases above increases and decreases above decreases to maintain the ripple pattern.
- Repeat this row to build up the pattern, ensuring you remember to increase in the first stitch and also in the last stitch of each row.
Working Color Changes and Slip Stitch Rows:
- After 4 rows of your color A, cut the yarn leaving a tail to be woven in later.
- Join your main color yarn with a new yarn strand and work a row of slip stitches across the top of your last row of color stitches.
- Chain 1, turn, and work another row of slip stitches across the top of the same stitches again to create a border that separates the color blocks.
- Switch to your color B (or the second color of your choice), chain 2, turn the work, and continue with the ripple pattern exactly as before.
Continue The Pattern:
- Work 4 rows each for colors B, C, and D.
- After each color block, work two rows of slip stitches with the main color as before.
- Then, work a large section with the main color only.
- Repeat the color blocks in the inverse order, finishing with color A.
Border:
- After completing all the color blocks, work a simple border in the main color.
- Chain 1 for the border and turn.
- Work single crochets across the row and around the entire blanket.
Finishing:
- Weave in all ends, paying attention to secure them properly, especially in a baby blanket that will be frequently used and washed.
