Tip:
To achieve vibrant color variations, experiment with ombre or variegated yarns for a fascinating visual effect!
Materials Needed:
- Yarn (of your choice)
- Crochet hook (size recommended for your yarn, typically 5mm for Aran/worsted weight or 4mm for sport/light worsted weight)
Basic Instructions:
Start the Square:
- Chain 4 then form a circle by slip stitching into the first chain to close the circle.
- Chain 3 (this counts as your first double crochet).
- Make 2 double crochets into the circle.
- Chain 2 to create your first corner.
- Make 3 double crochets into the circle.
- Repeat the pattern of chaining 2 and making 3 double crochets into the circle until you have four sets of 3 double crochets and four chain-2 spaces.
- Slip stitch to the top of the starting chain-3 to close the round.
Subsequent Rounds:
- To maintain a straight edge, always flip your work at the beginning of each new round.
- Start each new round on what will now be described as the “wrong” side.
- Attach new yarn if needed at any corner.
- Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet), then make 2 more double crochets, chain 2, and 3 double crochets all in the same corner space.
- For each side of the square between corners, make 3 double crochets into the space between existing clusters from the previous round (later rounds will have more spaces between corners as the square grows).
- For corners, execute the pattern: 3 double crochets, chain 2, and 3 double crochets.
- Continue around and use a slip stitch to join to the top of the initial chain-3 to finish the round.
- If the yarn is variegated, to keep the color flow neat, avoid cutting the yarn and use slip stitches to transition from one part of the round to the next seamlessly.
Finishing:
- Continue repeating the process for each round, increasing the number of 3-double crochet clusters between corners as the square grows.
- You can finish the square at any size. Note that it doesn’t require edging or a border due to the neat edges produced by flipping the work at each round.
