Tip:
Experiment with different stitch patterns to personalize your crop top and add a unique texture.
Materials Required:
- 200g of double knit yarn (100% acrylic is used in the video)
- A 4 mm crochet hook
- Needle and scissors
For Front Panel:
Start by making a slip knot and create a chain of 26 (or the length you want the ribbing to be).
- Skip the first chain from the hook and single crochet in the second chain and in each chain across the row.
- Chain 1 and turn your work at the end of the row. You should have 25 single crochets.
- For row 2, single crochet in the back loop only of each stitch across the row.
- Chain 1, turn your work and continue repeating row 2 for as many rows as needed until the ribbing is long enough to fit half of your waist (52 rows in the video).
- Once the ribbing is the desired length, evenly distribute 52 single crochets (or the number of your ribbing rows) along the side edge of the ribbing to transition into the front panel of the top.
Front Panel Body:
- Chain 1, turn your work and start making single crochets in each of the 52 stitches across.
- Chain 1, turn your work at the end of each row and repeat until you have enough rows to cover your chest area (34 rows in the video).
- Finish off by pulling the yarn through and leave a long tail. This will be used for sewing later.
Front Panel Shaping:
- Fold the upper rows of single crochets in layers to shape the top of your chest. This creates dart-like shapes, and the number of rows you fold determines the final look.
- Sew the folded layers together. You might need stitch markers or safety pins to help secure the layers before sewing.
Back Panel:
- Create the ribbing the same way as for the front panel.
- For the main part, make fewer rows because it needs to be shorter than the front to accommodate the dart fold (only 16 rows in the video).
- Finish with a longer tail for sewing.
Joining Panels:
- Place the front and back panels with the right sides facing each other and the wrong sides out.
- Align the rows on both panels and sew or slip stitch the sides together. Ensuring you match the ribbed parts on both panels.
Straps:
- For the straps, you will use Tunisian crochet stitches. Start 6 stitches in from the edge of the neckline, pulling up loops in each stitch (6 loops total as the example).
- Yarn over and pull through one loop, then continue to yarn over and pull through two loops until the end of the row.
- Continue working the Tunisian simple stitch for as many rows as needed to reach the desired strap length (42 rows in the video).
- After completing your Tunisian crochet rows, do a single crochet in each loop across the last row to finish the strap neatly.
- Sew the finished straps to the back panel, skipping an appropriate number of stitches from the side seam. Based on the fit you require (10 stitches left from the seam in the video).
Finishing Touches:
- Hide all the loose yarn tails by weaving them into the inside of the top using a needle.
- You may need to block your crop top so that it lies flat, as Tunisian crochet can curl.
