Materials Needed

  • FF milk cotton yarn (color: pink)
  • 3 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Magnet (7 mm wide and 1 mm thick, very thin)

Pattern Instructions

Making the Magic Ring

  • Starting the Ring: Hold the yarn with your right hand. With your left hand, point up two fingers. Wrap the yarn around your two fingers twice – place the yarn on top of your two fingers, go under and then over again creating a parallel line on the top of your fingers.
  • Securing the Yarn: Bring the yarn to the palm of your hand and hold it with your thumb, creating a cross. Hold the working yarn with your ring finger and pinky.
  • Forming the Ring: Insert the hook under the first yarn loop, grab the yarn that’s closest to you, and pull it through the first loop. Twist your hook 180° clockwise. Grab the working yarn again and pull it through the loop on your hook to create the magic ring.

  • Adjusting the Ring: Pull the tail to make the magic ring smaller. Hold the working yarn with two fingers and your piece with the middle finger and thumb. Pull the working yarn and the loop on your hook slightly tighter.

Starting the Crochet

  • Chain (CH) 2: Since making the magic ring counts as your first CH, CH one more time to make a total of 2 CHs.
  • Double Crochet (DC) 3: Yarn over (YO), insert the hook into the magic ring (ensuring the tail is included), YO again, pull up a loop, YO, pull through two loops, YO again, and pull through the last two loops. Repeat two more times for a total of 3 DCs.
  • Half-Double Crochet (HDC) 3: YO, insert your hook into the magic ring, YO, pull up a loop, (you should have three loops on your hook), YO, and pull through all three loops. Repeat twice for a total of 3 HDCs.

Shaping the Heart

  • CH 1.
  • HDC 3 and DC 3: Repeat the process but in reverse order to create the other side of the heart – 3 HDCs followed by 3 DCs.
  • CH 2.

  • Slip Stitch (SL ST): Insert your hook into the magic ring, YO, pull up a loop and pull it through the loop already on your hook to secure the shape.
  • Finishing: Cut a long tail of yarn, pull tight to close the magic ring fully, and shape into a heart. Trim any excess yarn.

Final Touches

  • Apply glue to the magnet and attach it to the back of the heart.
  • Optional: Make another heart in a different color for variation.
