Tip:

Use cotton yarn for better heat resistance and easy washing.

Materials:

  • 100% cotton yarn (Jennifer used Himalaya Denim Yarn, holding 3 strands together for thickness)
  • 5 mm crochet hook

Pattern:

Start:

  • Begin with a slip knot on your hook.

Chain:

  • Chain 30 (For an extra-large pot holder, increase the chain count to 40.
  • This pattern is adaptable and the exact count can be adjusted based on your needs).

Round 1:

  • In the very first chain from the hook, work 3 single crochets (This creates a rounded corner).
  • Work a single crochet in each chain across until you reach the last chain.
  • In the last chain, place 3 single crochets (to round the other corner).
  • Continue by working single crochets on the opposite side of your foundation chain. This starts forming a circular pattern.

Formation of the Bag/Pouch:

  • Finish the first round by placing a single crochet in each stitch around, making sure to place 3 single crochets in the last stitch to mirror the beginning.
  • Without joining, continue working in a spiral pattern.

Texture Pattern:

  • From the second round onwards, alternate between single crochet and double crochet stitches for each subsequent stitch around.
  • This creates a textured pattern that adds thickness to the hot pad.

  • Continue this pattern (Single Crochet, Double Crochet, Single Crochet, Double Crochet…) in the round until the piece is as tall as it is wide when folded in half.
  • This will give you a perfect square pot holder once folded and seamed.

Finishing:

  • Once you’ve reached the desired height (where it can fold perfectly to match edge to edge), finish off by folding the pouch in half to form a square.
  • Seam the edges together to close the pot holder. Jennifer prefers sewing the edges for a cleaner finish, but you can also crochet them together if you prefer.

  • For an optional handle, chain 15 (or more, for a larger loop) at one corner before finishing off.
  • Slip stitch into the base of the chain to form a loop, and then secure and weave in all ends.

Additional Notes:

  • Adjust the tightness of your stitches to ensure the pot holder is dense enough to protect hands from heat.
  • Consider using a liner or additional protective layer if intended for handling very high temperatures.
  • This pattern is versatile and allows for creativity with colors and yarn types, as long as it is cotton for heat resistance.
