Materials Needed:

  • Yarn (4 weight; any color)
  • Crochet hook (5 mm recommended)
  • Scissors
  • Stitch marker (optional)

Pattern Steps:

To Start:

Create a Slip Knot:

  • Loop yarn around fingers, pull end through to form a loop.

Chain 4:

  • Insert hook, yarn over, pull through loop. Repeat 3 more times for a total of 4 chains.

Join to Form a Circle:

  • Insert hook into the first chain made, yarn over and pull through the chain and loop on the hook.

Round 1:

Start the Cluster:

  • Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet).

Complete First Cluster:

  • Make 2 more double crochets into the circle. You now have a “cluster” of 3 double crochets.

Form a Corner:

  • Chain 2, then perform another set of 3 double crochets into the circle.

Repeat Around:

  • Continue around the circle, chaining 2 and making 3 double crochets for each side of the square.

Join and Secure:

  • Slip stitch into the top of the beginning chain 3. Cut the yarn, leaving a tail for weaving, and fasten off.

Round 2 (and subsequent rounds):

Attach New Yarn:

  • Start at any corner, attach a new color or same yarn with a slip stitch.

Begin Cluster:

  • Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet), then 2 more double crochets in the same space.

First Corner:

  • Chain 2, then 3 more double crochets in the same corner space.

Side Clusters:

  • Move to the next space between clusters of the previous round. Work 3 double crochets into this space.

Corners and Sides:

  • Continue around, making 3 double crochets for sides and corners separated by 2 chains, with 3 double crochets in each corner space.

Join and Change Colors:

  • Repeat the process for more rounds, changing colors as desired, until the granny square is of desired size.

Finishing:

Weave in Ends:

  • Use a yarn needle to weave in all loose ends for a neat finish.
