Crochet Scrunchie

Not only do these scrunchies look adorable, but they also provide a gentle hold, reducing breakage and damage to your hair. Whether you’re making them for yourself or as thoughtful gifts for friends and family, these scrunchies are bound to be a hit.

Tip:

For extra durability, use elastic bands as the base for your scrunchies.

Materials Needed:

  • Cotton yarn (100% cotton from Drops Safran suggested)
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook
  • A pair of scissors
  • Yarn needle
  • Hair tie

Pattern:

Start with a slip knot:

  • Make a slipknot on your hook.
  • Chain 16 (for a standard size) or Chain 20 (for a bulkier look): Yarn over, insert into the loop, and make 16 (or 20 if you prefer a bulkier scrunchie) chains. Your chains should measure approximately 9 to 10 centimeters.

Join with a slip stitch:

  • Insert your hook into the first chain without twisting the chain. Make sure everything is straight, and then perform a slip stitch into the back loop of the first chain.

Chain 2:

  • This counts as your first half-double crochet (hdc).

Half Double Crochet into Back Loops Only:

  • Yarn over, insert your hook into the back loop of the next chain, yarn over again, pull through the loop (you should have three loops on your hook), then yarn over and pull through all three loops. This completes one hdc in the back loop only. Continue this all the way around the chain.

Join and Begin New Rounds:

  • Once you’ve completed hdc in each chain, slip stitch into the top of the initial chain 2 to join the round. Chain 2 to start a new round and continue with half-double crochet into the back loops only for each stitch around.

Continue the Pattern:

  • Repeat the process of creating rounds with hdc in back loops only, joining with a slip stitch at the end of each round and starting a new round with a chain of 2. Do this until the scrunchie reaches your desired fullness.

Closing:

  • Once you are satisfied with the size, slip stitch into the top of the initial chain 2 to join the final round. Then, chain 1 and cut your yarn, leaving a tail long enough for sewing.

Finishing:

  • Use your yarn needle to weave in the ends. Sew the first and last rounds together if necessary to ensure a seamless look. Make sure your scrunchie isn’t twisted before finalizing your stitches.

Secure and Weave in Ends:

  • After sewing, make sure everything is secure, weave in any remaining ends, and trim any excess yarn.
