Materials:

  • Christmas balls (any size, but used in this tutorial are 8 cm and 4 cm balls)
  • Yarn (two colors are used in the tutorial, but you can choose as many as you like)
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Pattern:

Round 1:

  • Start with a magic circle.
  • Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet).
  • Make 11 more double crochets into the magic circle (total of 12 double crochets).
  • Pull the circle tight and slip stitch into the top of the beginning chain 3.

Round 2:

  • Change yarn (optional).
  • Attach new yarn in any stitch.
  • Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet).
  • Make another double crochet in the same stitch. Then, 2 double crochets in each stitch around.
  • You will have a total of 24 double crochets.
  • Slip stitch into the top of the beginning chain 3.

After Round 3:

  • Change yarn (optional).
  • Work in the back loops (here referred to as the third loop) of the stitches.
  • Attach new yarn in any back loop.
  • Chain 1, then make single crochets in each back loop around.
  • Slip stitch into the first single crochet to join.

For Round 4:

  • Change yarn (optional).
  • Attach new yarn in any stitch.
  • Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet).
  • Make another double crochet in the same stitch, skip a stitch, then 2 double crochets in the next stitch. Continue this pattern (2 double crochets, skip one) around.
  • Slip stitch into the top of the beginning chain 3.

Round 5:

  • Chain 1, single crochet in the same place as the join, and then make a spike stitch between the 2-double crochet clusters from the previous round. Continue with single crochet in the next stitch and a spike stitch between the next clusters around.
  • Slip stitch into the first single crochet to join.

Round 6:

  • Change yarn (optional).
  • Working in the back loops (third loop) again, attach yarn, chain 1, and work half double crochets around in each third loop.
  • Slip stitch to join.

Repeat Rounds as Necessary:

  • For smaller balls (e.g., 4 cm), you might want to stop after Round 6.
  • For larger balls (e.g., 8 cm), continue adding rounds until you cover half the ball. Add more rounds with single crochets if needed for size adjustments.

Finishing:

  • Once you’ve reached the desired size, slip stitch to join the final round, chain 1 to secure, cut yarn, and weave in ends.
  • Fit the crochet cover over the ball.
  • Using a yarn needle and a long strand of yarn, sew the edges of the cover together around the ball for a snug fit. Ensure to secure and weave in all ends.
  • Optionally, attach a ribbon to the top for hanging.
