Materials Needed:

  • Cotton Yarn (Catania from Schachenmayr recommended for original; color red yarn used in demonstration)
  • Crochet Hook 2 millimeter (2.5 millimeter used in demonstration for clarity)

Pattern Steps:

For Round 1:

  • Start with a magic ring.
  • Crochet three chain stitches.
  • Make one double crochet in the ring.
  • Chain one.
  • Repeat the double crochet and chain one in the ring 11 more times. You should have a total of 11 double crochet and chain stitches together to make 12.
  • Finish the round with a slip stitch in the second chain stitch.
  • Pull the yarn and close the ring.

Round 2:

  • Chain one then do a slip stitch between these chain stitches and the first double crochet.
  • For the next section, chain five then do a slip stitch between the next two double crochet.
  • In the next section, chain three and do a slip stitch between the next double crochet. Repeat this to the end of the round.
  • Alternate between a bigger section (five chain stitches) and a smaller section (three chain stitches) finishing with a final bigger section of only two chain stitches and a single crochet in this chain stitch.
  • By the end of Round 2, you should have six bigger sections and six smaller sections.

Round 3:

  • Chain one. In a big section, do two double crochet, three chain stitches, and a slip stitch.
  • Then crochet one triple crochet, five chain stitches, and do a slip stitch.
  • Do one more triple crochet in the same section.
  • Chain three, slip stitch, and complete two double crochet in the first section.
  • Chain one, slip stitch in the little section, and repeat every section as before: two double crochet, three, chain stitches, slip stitch, triple crochet, five chain stitches, slip stitch, triple crochet.
  • Finish the round with the last two double crochet and two chain ones, then do a slip stitch in the last little section.
  • Cut the yarn, pull through the backside, and secure.

Finishing Touches:

  • It is noted that the snowflake looks better when crocheted with a thinner hook, but a bigger hook was used in the video for clearer visualization.
  • Lastly, fasten off any loose ends and shape your snowflake as desired.
