Tip:
For a more defined ribbed texture, use a yarn with a firm twist.
Materials Needed:
- 5mm crochet hook
- Medium weight (weight 4) yarn. For the solid color hat, Lion Brand Basic Stitch yarn in oatmeal color is used, and for the striped version, a combination of Big Twist Just Living and Caron Simply Soft yarns.
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Stitch markers
Pattern Overview:
- The pattern involves basic crochet stitches: half double crochet and single crochet.
- There are instructions for a solid color beanie as well as a version with color changes every row.
Starting Chain:
- Create a slip knot and chain 44 stitches.
- Adjust the number of chains for the desired size, ensuring the chain can wrap comfortably from the forehead to the crown of the head, accounting for a fold in the brim.
Row 1:
- Do half double crochet (HDC) in each chain starting from the third chain from the hook until you have 8 chains left.
- Switch to single crochet (SC) for the last 8 stitches. Place a stitch marker in the 8th stitch from the end as a reminder.
Row 2 onward (Creating the Ribbing Effect):
- Turn your work. Chain 1 for turning, then do 8 SC through the back loop only for the next 8 stitches.
- Change to HDC through the back loop only for the rest of the row.
- For the next row, chain 2 for turning when doing HDC and chain 1 for turning when starting with SC.
- Continue this pattern until the piece is wide enough to wrap around your head, typically around 52 rows, ensuring to alternate starting the row with SC and HDC to create a ribbed effect.
Joining Ends:
- Lay the piece flat, ensuring the starting row and finishing row align with ribs facing opposite directions for a seamless join.
- Cut the yarn leaving a long tail, and use a yarn needle to stitch both ends together with single crochets.
Closing the Top:
- With the yarn still attached, measure about two times the height of the hat for the yarn tail, cut, and then secure by pulling through and tightening.
- Sew around the top edge, weaving in and out every two stitches.
- Pull the yarn tight to gather the top closed, secure with a couple of knots, and weave in ends.
Hat Brim:
- Fold the brim of the hat up to the desired width.
Adding Color (Optional):
- For the striped version, alternate colors every two rows or as desired.
- Change colors on the last pull-through of the last stitch of every second row for a clean color change.
- Carry the non-working yarn along the side by crocheting over it to minimize ends.
- Remember to account for the fold in the brim when measuring the work around your head.
- Adjust the number of starting chains and rows to fit the head size as needed.
- Always check fit as you progress to ensure a comfortable fit.
