Tip:
For added durability and comfort, consider using a soft yet sturdy yarn blend that includes a hint of wool or alpaca.
Materials Needed:
- Yarn: Acrylic (You can also use cotton, woolen, or a mix as per availability)
- Crochet Hook: 3 millimeters
- Yarn Needle
- Stitch Marker
General Size:
- Designed for EU sizes 37 and 38. Adjustments can be made for other sizes by changing the number of rows.
Pattern:
Starting the Granny Square:
Begin with a Magic Ring.
- Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet).
- Make 2 more double crochets into the ring. You now have a set of 3 double crochets.
Create the Corner:
- Chain 2.
- Make 3 more double crochets into the ring.
- Repeat the process of “chain 2” and “3 double crochets” until you have 4 sets of 3 double crochets separated by 2 chains each, forming the square’s corners.
- Pull the yarn to close the magic ring.
- Slip stitch to the top of the initial chain 3 to close the round.
- Cut the yarn and secure it.
Growing the Granny Square:
Change Colors (if desired):
- Start in any corner space with a new color.
First Corner:
- Attach the new yarn.
- Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet).
- Add 2 more double crochets, chain 2, and then 3 more double crochets into the same space.
Proceed to the Next Corner:
- (No chains in between at this point).
- Work 3 double crochets, 2 chains, and 3 more double crochets in the next corner space.
- Repeat the pattern around the square.
- Slip stitch to the top of the initial chain 3 to close the round.
- Cut the yarn and secure it.
Continue Adding Rounds:
- Repeat the process for each row, changing colors if desired. In each round, the number of “3 double crochet” groups between corners will increase.
- Remember to work in the sides without chaining between blocks, and only chain 2 at the corners.
Adjustment for Size:
- For sizes 37 and 38, make 15 rows. Adjust the number of rows for different sizes.
Finishing the Granny Square:
- Once you have completed the desired number of rows, tie off your last stitch and weave in all ends.
Converting the Granny Square into Slippers:
Folding:
- Lay the square flat with the right side facing you.
- Fold the square diagonally to form a triangle.
Sewing:
- Count 5 clusters from the corner along the edge, place a stitch marker.
- Starting from the stitch marker, sew the edges together towards the tip of the triangle, leaving the last 3 clusters (for the toe space) unsewn.
Creating the Toe Space:
- Fold the loose ends towards each other and sew together to create the toe space.
Finishing Touches:
- Weave in any remaining ends. Turn the slipper right side out.
