Material Needed:

  • Yarn
  • Crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle

Start the Granny Pentagon:

  • Make a slip knot using the method you prefer.
  • Chain 5.
  • Form a circle by slip stitching into the first chain created.
  • Chain 3 (this will act as your first double crochet).

Create Clusters:

  • Inside the circle, make 2 double crochets to complete your first cluster (which starts with the chain 3).
  • Chain 3.
  • Make another cluster of 3 double crochets.
  • Chain 3 after each cluster.
  • Continue this pattern until you have a total of 5 clusters (including the initial chain 3 as the first double crochet of the first cluster).

  • Close the first round by chaining 3 and then joining with a slip stitch to the top of the starting chain 3.

First Round:

  • This completes your Pentagon and the first round of the star.

Second Round (Transforming the Pentagon into the Star shape):

  • Chain 1.
  • In the same stitch, make 1 single crochet.
  • Continue with a single crochet in each of the next two stitches.
  • In the chain-3 space, make 3 single crochets.
  • Chain 3. (If you want a pointier star, make a picot stitch by slip stitching into the back bump of the first chain you made; otherwise, skip the picot stitch for a softer point.)
  • After the picot or the chain 3 (depending on your preference), make 3 more single crochets in the same chain-3 space.

Continue Pattern:

  • Repeat the process of creating single crochets over the double crochets from the previous row, followed by the 3 single crochets, chain 3 (plus picot stitch if desired), and 3 more single crochets in each chain-3 space around the star.

Finishing the Star:

  • After completing the final picot stitch and 3 single crochets, slip stitch into the first double crochet to close the round.
  • Your star should now take its shape.

Creating a Hanging Loop (Optional):

  • If you want to create a loop to hang the ornament, chain the desired length and slip stitch into the beginning of the chain to form a loop.
  • Cut the yarn and secure it.

Weave in Ends:

  • Hide your yarn tails by weaving them into your work with a tapestry needle or a smaller crochet hook for a clean finish.
