Crochet Peppermint Swirl Pillow Pattern

Tip:
For a more defined swirl effect, contrast light and dark yarns for a striking visual impact.
Materials Needed:
- 5.5mm crochet hook
- Acrylic yarn (The demonstrator uses Hobby Lobby’s “I Love This Yarn” in white and red, but any acrylic yarn will do.)
- Pillow insert (Size of the insert depends on how big you want your pillow. The video demonstrates a 16-inch pillow.)
Crochet Pattern:
Foundation and First Row:
- Start with a Magic Circle using white yarn.
- Chain (ch) 3, this counts as your first stitch.
- Perform 7 Double Crochets (DC) into the center of the magic circle, totaling 8 DC including the ch 3.
- Close the circle but don’t tighten it completely as you’ll be working into it.
Transition to Red Yarn:
- Slip Stitch (sl st) to transition from white to red yarn, keeping the working yarn in front of the work.
- Ch 3 (counts as a DC and ch 1).
- DC into the next stitch, chain 1. Repeat around the circle.
- Join with a sl st to the third chain of the initial ch 3.
Continued Pattern Building:
- Continue in this pattern, alternating between white and red yarn. Each round increases by adding stitches in the chain spaces.
- Keep each layer distinctive by slipping the stitches and properly aligning the red and white yarns to maintain the pattern’s integrity.
Increase Pattern:
- Increase the rounds until you have a complete circle that aligns with your pillow insert size.
- For a 16-inch pillow, increase each round until you have 12 DC separated by ch 12 spaces.
- Note that if you prefer a smaller pillow (e.g., 14-inch), you would stop at rounds featuring 10 DC separated by ch 10 spaces.
Decrease for Closing:
- Begin your decrease after completing the increase portion suitable for your insert size.
- The decrease pattern inversely mirrors your increases, reducing the stitch count in each round until you reach your starting point.
Finishing:
- After completing the decrease rounds down to the last few, prepare to insert the pillow form before the opening becomes too small.
- Continue closing around the pillow insert by further decreasing until you’re able to close the hole completely.
- Fasten off and weave in the ends for a neat finish.
