- Tape measure
Pattern
Stitches Used:
- Chain (ch)
- Slip Stitch (sl st)
- Single Crochet (sc)
- Half Double Crochet (hdc)
- Back Loop Slip Stitch (bl sl st)
- Back Loop Half Double Crochet (bl hdc)
Pattern:
Begin with a Slip Knot: Chain one (ch 1), block off that chain and chain two more (ch 2). The ch 2 is a turning chain and doesn’t count as a stitch.
Base Circle (Row One): Begin with 11 hdc into the first chain made.
Middle Stitch Marker: Insert a stitch marker into the 6th stitch (the middle stitch).
Row Two (Back Loop Sl St Row): Chain one (ch 1) and turn. Work 11 back loop slip stitches (bl sl st) across, inserting the stitch marker into the middle stitch. Remember not to pull too tightly after each stitch.
Row Three (Increase Row): Chain two (ch 2) and turn. Start with three half double crochets in the first stitch (an increase), then do one hdc in each, until one stitch before the stitch marker. Perform increases as follows: two hdc into stitch before marker, five hdc into marker stitch (place the marker into the third hdc made), two hdc into following stitch. Continue with one hdc in each stitch to the end with an increase of three hdc in the last stitch.
Row Four: Chain one (ch 1) and turn. Repeat the back loop slip stitch (bl sl st) row without increases or decreases.
Repeat Rows: Alternate rows three and four, increasing at the edges and the center marker on hdc rows until the neckline’s desired width is met.
Underarm Portion:
After completing the neckline, continue alternating hdc increase rows without edge increases and bl sl st rows until the piece can stretch across mid-underarm.
Length of the Top: Once the underarm portion is complete, work hdc and bl sl st rows (without increases or decreases) until the desired length of the top is achieved.
Fill in the Sides: Work decrease rows to fill in the bottom corners of the top, communicating your work with a decrease.
Back Panel: Repeat similar steps as the front panel, starting with a foundation chain that matches the front panel’s last single crochet row’s stitch count. Create the underarm and neckline in the same way, using chains to reach shoulder height.
Seam the Sides: Use an outside loop slip stitch seam to connect the front and back panels on both sides.
Underarm Edging: Work a single crochet prep row along the underarm edges, followed by a series of back loop slip stitch rows for the underarm detail.
Neckline: Connect the front and back panels with single crochet rows and chains for the shoulders, followed by back loop slip stitch rows for the neckline edging.
Completion: Finally, weave in all of your ends to finish the modern tank top.
