Tip:

Materials Needed

  • 5.5 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Three different colors of yarn (for the pumpkin, the stem, and an alternative color – black is used in the tutorial)

Basic Instructions & Pattern

Start with a Slip Knot & Chain 28:

  • Begin by making a slip knot and then chain 28 stitches to form the base of the cup holder.

Join & Single Crochet (SC) Around:

  • Join the chain with a slip stitch to make a circle. Ensure it’s not twisted. Chain one and place a single crochet in each chain around (28 stitches in total).

Change Colors & Half Double Crochet (HDC):

  • After completing the single crochet round:
  • Slip stitch to the first SC,
  • Chain one, then make a half double crochet,
  • With the second color (pumpkin color), pull through all three loops on the hook for a color change.

Work in Bubble Stitches:

  • In the next stitch, work a bubble stitch which consists of 4 incomplete half double crochets, leaving 5 loops on the hook. Pull through all 5 loops with the black yarn. Chain one.

HDC and Color Changes:

  • Make three half double crochets in the next stitches. On the third one, change yarn back to the pumpkin color for another bubble stitch in the next stitch.

Repeat the Pattern Around:

  • Continue the pattern of 3 HDCs in black followed by a bubble stitch in orange around.
  • Next Rounds – Continuous Color Changes & Bubble Stitches:

  • Keep up with the pattern, changing colors as needed, working the bubble stitches in the specified places to create the pumpkin pattern. Alternate the bubble stitches and HDCs in the color sequence as described through the round, ensuring to carry the yarn along to work seamless color changes.

Final Rounds – Single Crochets & Finish:

  • In the final rounds after achieving the desired height, work single crochets around, switching colors as needed to match the pattern (remembering to work into the back loops only when indicated, to create texture),
  • For the top row, place single crochets around in the top of each stitch, switching to the stem color for the top of each “pumpkin” section to simulate the stem.

Finishing Steps

Close Up the Top Row:

  • Complete the pattern with a slip stitch into the first single crochet of the final round.

Weave in Ends:

  • Cut the yarn, leaving a tail. Use the tapestry needle to weave in all the loose ends securely.

Additional Tips

  • The instructor uses scrap yarn, showcasing this project as an excellent way to use up leftover yarn.
  • You have the option to cut the yarn and attach new colors as you go instead of carrying the colors along, depending on your preference for the inside look of the holder.
