Tip:

Materials Needed:

  • Slip knot
  • Crochet hook
  • Yarn

Instructions:

Base Chain:

Begin by making a slip knot.

  1. Chain 35 for a size large to extra large. For a size small or medium, consider chaining 30.

Row 1:

  1. Skip 1 chain from the hook, and make a single crochet in the next stitch.
  2. Chain 1, skip the next stitch, and make an extended single crochet in the following stitch. To do an extended single crochet:
    • Insert your hook, pull through (you now have two loops on the hook),
    • Yarn over, pull through one loop,
    • Yarn over again, and pull through the last two loops on your hook.
  3. Repeat the pattern (chain 1, skip one, and make an extended single crochet) until the end of the row.

Row 2:

  1. Chain 1 and turn your work.
  2. Work in the V stitch (not the chain-1 space) of the previous row’s extended single crochet.
  3. In each V stitch, make an extended single crochet, chain 1. Repeat across the row.

Increase Rows:

At the start of Row 3 (an increase row), chain 1 and turn your work.

  1. Inside the same V stitch, make an extended single crochet, chain 1, and then place another extended single crochet in the same V stitch (this is the increase).
  2. Continue with ‘chain 1, and extended single crochet’ in each V stitch across. At the last V stitch, place two extended single crochets to increase.
  3. For Row 4 and beyond, maintain this increase at the beginning and end of each row until you reach the desired size. For a size large to extra large, aim for 19 rows of increase. For a smaller size, 17 rows should suffice.

Non-Increase Rows:

  1. After completing your increase rows, chain 1 and turn your work.
  2. Work one extended single crochet in the first V stitch, then continue placing one extended single crochet in every V stitch across the row with chain 1 spaces in between.
  3. Repeat the process to make about 10 to 12 rows of non-increase for the desired length of your halter top.

Finishing Borders:

  1. Chain 1 and work one single crochet in each row space along the borders of the top.
  2. You may go around the edges twice for a neater finish but it’s optional.
  3. To finish the row, cut the yarn and fasten off.

Straps:

  1. Attach yarn by folding it into two to make a thicker strand.
  2. Chain a long strand for about 150 chains or until you reach the desired length for the halter ties.
  3. Attach these chains to the corners of the top part of your halter top.

Final Touches:

  • Lay your work flat, and make any final adjustments or decorations as you desire.
  • You can try on your halter top and adjust the straps to fit comfortably around your neck and back.
