Tip:

For a more tailored fit, use a smaller hook size when joining the hexagons together.

Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn (246 yards per ball) in your desired colors. The tutorial uses Color Theory from Two of Wands and Lion Brand Yarn.
  • 6 mm J crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Removable stitch markers
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure

Abbreviations:

  • CH: Chain

  • DC: Double crochet
  • HDC: Half double crochet
  • SC: Single crochet
  • INC: Increase (work 2 stitches in the same stitch)

Steps:

Make two hexagons:

Round 1:

CH 4, join with SL ST to form a ring. CH 3 (counts as 1st DC), work 2 DC in the ring. The CH 2, work 3 DC in the ring. Repeat 5 more times. Join with SL ST to the 3rd CH.

Round 2:

  • CH 3 (counts as 1st DC), work 1 DC in each DC around. In the corner spaces, work 2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC. Join with SL ST to the 3rd CH.
  • Repeat rounds 2 and 3 until your hexagons are the desired size. The tutorial uses 8 rounds for each hexagon.

Fold the hexagons:

  • Lay one hexagon flat and fold it in half so that the two widest points meet.
  • Fold the hexagon in half again to form an L-shape.
  • Repeat with the second hexagon.

Seam the shoulders:

  • With the right sides facing out, place the two hexagons together so that the L-shapes overlap.
  • Pin the shoulders together.
  • Using a tapestry needle and yarn, whip stitch along the shoulders.

Seam the sides:

  • Turn the cardigan inside out.
  • Pin the sides together, starting from the bottom and working up to the underarms.
  • Whip stitch along the sides.

Add edging (optional):

  • CH 1, SC in the first stitch. Work SC around the entire cardigan.
  • In the corners, work 3 SC in the same stitch.
  • Weave in any loose ends and fasten off.
