Materials:

  • Red yarn (4 ply) for the mushroom cap
  • White yarn for the spots
  • Tan yarn for the gills and the stem
  • Black yarn for embroidering facial features

Stuffing for the stem

  • Safety eyes or black beads for the eyes
  • A keychain blank (earring) if making a keychain
  • 3 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch marker (or a paper clip)
  • Scissors

Mushroom Cap:

 

  • Start with a magic circle using red yarn.

Round 1:

  • Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch), then make 6 single crochets (sc) into the magic circle. Pull the tail to cinch the circle closed. (6 sc)

Round 2 (Increase Round):

  • Increase in each stitch around (two sc in each stitch). (12 sc)

For Round 3:

  • 1 sc in the next three stitches, increase in the fourth stitch. Repeat – two more times. (15 sc)

Round 4:

  • 1 sc in the next four stitches, increase in the fifth stitch. Repeat – two more times. (18 sc)

For Round 5:

  • 1 sc in the next two stitches, increase in the third stitch. Repeat – five more times. (24 sc)

Round 6-7:

  • 1 sc in each stitch around. (24 sc each round)
  • Cut the yarn, leaving a tail for weaving in.

White Spots:

  • Embroider the white spots onto the mushroom cap using the French knot technique and white yarn.

Make Gills:

Gills Round 1:

  • Work into the back loops of the last round of the mushroom cap using tan yarn to create the gills with two double crochets together (2 dc tog) around. (12 stitches)

Gills Round 2:

In Stem Round 6:

  • 1 sc in each stitch around. (18 sc)

Stem Round 7 (Decrease Round):

  • 1 sc in the next stitch, then invisible decrease. Repeat – five more times. (12 sc)
  • Stuff the stem.

Stem Round 8 (Decrease Round):

  • Decrease in each stitch around. (6 sc)
  • Close up the opening and weave in the ends.

Finishing Touches:

  • Add safety eyes between rounds 4 and 5, two stitches apart.
  • Embroider a smile with black yarn between rounds 4 and 5.
  • Add blush to the cheeks if desired.
