Materials Needed:

  • Two colors of weight 4 yarn (acrylic or cotton) – example colors are reddish-pink and white for the candy cane colors.
  • Tacky glue (purchased from Walmart).
  • Crochet hook size 4.5 mm.
  • Crafting scissors.
  • A small piece of thin wire (this can be sourced from a dollar store; fold to make it thicker if too thin).
  • A stitch marker (optional, useful for absolute beginners).

Instructions:

Starting Off:

Create a Slip Knot:

  • With your preferred starting color (red or white), create a slip knot.
  • To do this, grab the end of your yarn, twist to make a loop, go through the loop, and pull through.
  • Attach the slip knot to your crochet hook and pull snugly.

Chaining:

  • Start creating chains by yarning over the hook and pulling through the loop on your hook.
  • The pattern is customizable; a suggestion is to chain 24 to make a mini candy cane, but you can adjust the count for larger or smaller sizes.

First Crochet Row:

  • Into the second chain from the hook, insert the hook to do a single crochet.
  • To do a single crochet: Insert your hook, yarn over, pull through (two loops on hook), then yarn over again and pull through both loops.
  • In the same stitch, insert another single crochet.
  • This pattern (two single crochets in each stitch) continues for the entirety of the chain. Your project should start to curl, which is intended.

Completing the Strip:

  • Once you reach the end of your chain, cut off a short tail end of the yarn, fasten off by pulling the yarn all the way through.

Repeating for the Second Color:

  • Repeat the exact same steps as above with your second color yarn to create an identical curled strip.

Assembling the Candy Cane:

Preparing the Wire:

  • Take your piece of wire, fold if necessary to adjust thickness, this will form the internal structure of the candy cane.

Attaching the Yarn Strips:

  • Apply a bit of tacky glue to one end of one strip and press the beginning of the other strip onto it to adhere together.

Wrapping Around the Wire:

  • If using regular wire, thread it through the joined yarn pieces; if using a folded piece, secure it around the yarn.
  • Apply tacky glue along the wire and start wrapping the yarn strips around, ensuring the wire is in the center. Follow the natural curl to resemble a candy cane.
  • Continue until the entire wire is covered, and secure the end with more glue.

Finishing Touches:

  • Mold the wire to form the hooked shape of a candy cane. Trim any excess wire and make sure the ends are secure.
